To be honest, I don't think I did very well on that type of interview where I had to do a fake usability test and then present findings. So much pressure! I'm going through the interview process at a startup right now and I'm really nervous about the final round. I have to come up with a research strategy, do a mock usability test, analyzed my results, and present! You mentioned you had to go through the same (intimidating!!) process for one of your interviews. Any advice on how to prepare?
Mary https://www.blogger.com/profile/05814268448933170635noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2499691751913992519.post-30519338961164207592014-03-07T17:39:22.882-08:002014-03-07T17:39:22.882-08:00Sorry for the late reply, just saw this! Hope your interview went well!

So in retrospect, I found out that my team at Yammer really appreciated that I was honest about what I knew and what I still wanted to learn more about, since I was new to UX Research.

Other things that I have learned since then and in interviewing researchers at Yammer:
Depends on the company, but at Yammer we appreciate concise research "reports" - a short PowerPoint deck or a TL;DR of what was found in the research, or maybe even just a few bullet points of key findings. In interviewing researchers, we try to suss out if they will be able to be concise and persuasive when delivering research. Sometimes we can figure that out by their portfolio and their research deliverables. Otherwise, we just ask them questions about it.

Another thing I've learned since then... you wouldn't believe how many people come to interview that have never tried out the product or don't have a very good reason for wanting to work here. It can be really obvious sometimes that people are just trying to move to San Francisco. Make sure you familiarize yourself with the product and maybe even do some quick research of it beforehand with friends/family.

Also, it took me a couple of interview rounds to figure out what I was doing.

That's all I can think of for right now. Once again, good luck!
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00016696117657982492noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2499691751913992519.post-34877272225043645232014-03-01T16:35:18.703-08:002014-03-01T16:35:18.703-08:00Very helpful, Grace.

Pshawwww." But then I considered that for most lab experiments there are multiple conditions being tested, and that if you have, for example a 2X2X2 design (relatively simple), and you counterbalance with an N of 96, that's 12 people in a specific condition. Since it sounds like for the usability experiment testers were looking at a single version of the product, 6 is actually a good sample. Nielsen's graph is pretty on point also in terms of pointing out that people will find errors pretty efficiently. I think that when presenting findings from a small sample it definitely helps to do all of the items mentioned above, and also show engineers what does work and what people find intuitive and good, not just errors.Povhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10175640321754014224noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2499691751913992519.post-34071386278540485372012-06-20T08:58:22.917-07:002012-06-20T08:58:22.917-07:00Hey Pov! I totally see what you're saying. I...Hey Pov! I totally see what you're saying. I think you're right in that it can provide concept validity, but probably not completely new groundbreaking design concepts. I think with research in general, designers and engineers tend to be surprised how actual users go ahead use a product, or how they decide to organize a website. I think that part is useful - seeing that other people think differently and then trying to put yourself in their shoes.

It's interesting that companies like Apple do very little User Research because their philosophy seems to be more about "knowing" what the users will be wanting. To them, if you need to do research, you're not a good designer.

Another thing I've learned about from that Stanford class (and now I'm just riffing here) is that many users come up with their own "hacks" to get around design flaws. I feel like finding those people who have identified a problem and created their own personalized solution is probably extremely useful to designers. Where are THOSE people?!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00016696117657982492noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2499691751913992519.post-4639038685601870282012-06-19T21:32:38.158-07:002012-06-19T21:32:38.158-07:00Are vegan cupcakes meta because one has to think s...Are vegan cupcakes meta because one has to think super hard about oneself while making them?Povhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10175640321754014224noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2499691751913992519.post-35791676709135574672012-06-19T21:29:25.292-07:002012-06-19T21:29:25.292-07:00Participatory design seems to be a popular tool, w...Participatory design seems to be a popular tool, where creators can definitely get feedback from users or team members, and can get an idea of what capabilities to prioritize in dev. On the flip side, I think there is a lot of literature that indicates that participants often don't know what they want until they see it. Some people say that participatory design takes a lot of time and planning, but tends to have low rewards in terms of coming up with ideas that haven't already been discussed by product creators. Although, confirmation of successful designs/ideas and criticism of lackluster notions can help teams feel confident in the process.Povhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10175640321754014224noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2499691751913992519.post-22766872241777597522012-06-19T21:27:53.173-07:002012-06-19T21:27:53.173-07:00This comment has been removed by the author.Povhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10175640321754014224noreply@blogger.com
